Myanmar

Arakan & Cultural Experience

Description

Myanmar, or Burma as it was formerly known, holds great mystery, beauty and legends. From Himalayan Mountains in the north, to stunning ancient temples, enchanting lakes, untouched white sand beaches and soulful people, you’ll enjoy an experience in one of the world’s last unexplored corners in style.

Rudyard Kipling once described Myanmar as “quite unlike any place you know about”, and we invite you to come and discover the spirit and hidden corners of this nation on the move.

Day 3

  • Mrauk U – Chin Tattoo Villages

  • After breakfast, start a scenic journey on a bumpy road by car about 30 minutes to the village.

  • Then continue by boat up along the Lay Mro River to the Lay Too Chin minority villages for 2-3 hours. There are some 50 Chin villages in the southern Rakhine region, maintaining a distinct culture and traditional lifestyle. Chin people are probably best known for their colorful fabrics, as well as tattooed faces of the women. A legend said that former Burmese Kings considered Chin women to be the most beautiful of all the ethnic tribes. They would travel to the Chin State looking for women to bring back to the capitol as their concubines. Chin girls, from the age of 13, began to tattoo their faces to make them ugly and to prevent them from being taken to the Burmese palace. Though this tattooing practice has mostly stopped, you can see the tattoos on the older generations.  You will also visit local weavers keeping this ancient tradition flourishing.

  • After arriving back in Mrauk U via boat and car, you have the rest of the day free to spend at your leisure.

  • Overnight in Mrauk U.

  • On arrival catch your connecting flight to Luang Prabang.
