Swakopmund Dessert-Fat Bike Experience
3 Days / 2 Nights
September 2019 - April 2020
An opportunity to explore the vast sea of dunes in our backyard suddenly became possible without the need for motorized vehicles or having to walk far... which also excited us as we strive to have as little impact on this fragile, natural habitat as possible. Not only do the balloon-like tyres allow for almost effortless floating over pebbles and sand but because of a wider contact area, the rider's weight is more spread and a fat bike's tacks far shallower than even footprints - making it the most ecological way to explore our delicate desert. We also hope to instil an appreciation and respect for the Namib desert habitat and its vast animal and plant life.
Itinerary in detail
Day 1: Arrival in Swakopmund
2 Hour Scenic Desert Tour
What a thrill to be able to ride a bike up a dune... never could we have imagined it until the arrival of the fat bike! On our Scenic Desert Tour, you take in the silence and breath-taking scenery of the oldest desert in the world while feeling the fresh coastal air and enjoying the thrill of cycling up and down Namibia's famous dunes. Guaranteed to excite and offer an unforgettable and unique cycling experience.
The scenic desert tour is around 12 - 14km long and includes cycling through the dry Swakop river bed and up and down stunning dunes. Although everyone appreciates the amazing scenery, a relative level of fitness and knowing how to ride a bicycle is required to fully enjoy this tour. For the unfit and inexperienced rider, we recommend one of our other equally special tours. Min of 2.
Day 2: Swakopmund
7-8 Hour Sandwich Harbour Tour
Experience the world famous “where the desert meets the sea” on a fat bike. Sandwich Harbour on the edge of the world heritage site, Sand Sea of Namibia, is one of the most special places in the world. The Fat Bike allows us to explore this amazing area in the most ecological and close to nature way, a once in a lifetime experience.
You will be collected from your accommodation in Swakopmund or Walvis Bay. We will then transfer by 4x4 vehicle for about 40km along the coast heading to Sandwich Harbour. Approximately 8km before Sandwich Harbour we offload the fat bikes and enjoy the amazing 8km cycle along beach and dunes to the Sandwich Harbour lagoon. Stopping along the way for photos and water breaks. The cycle is +/- 3 hours. On return to the vehicle we enjoy some food and well-deserved ice-cold drinks.
Day 3: Swakopmund (B/ -/ -)
3 Hour City & Desert Tour
This tour is a 360 experience of Swakopmund and its surroundings! Combining our "Old City" Swakopmund Tour (including the Mondesa township) and Scenic Desert Tour, giving you a full view of both the city and surrounding desert area. We start off by riding down memory lane, passing some of Swakopmund's historic buildings and landmarks to give the visitor a feel of how our charming town started and why Swakopmund is still one of Namibia's most popular places to visit. Next we ride though the hustle and bustle of the Mondesa township to experience and appreciated the rich cultural diversity of our city. We then head off into the dunes to take in the breath-taking scenery of the oldest desert in the world in a fully ecological way without noise or air pollution and even cycling up and down Namibia’s famous dunes from which you will enjoy once in a lifetime views of desert, sea and Swakopmund. On our way back we might encounter some camels in the Swakop riverbed.
